Policosanol Side Effects



Policosanol side effects are not common.

The supplement is usually taken once or twice a day up to about 30 mg. It can cause thinning of the blood just like aspirin.

If you are taking blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin) or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen, consult your health care provider before taking policosanol.

It has no known interactions with nutrients or foods.

Some nutritional supplement manufacturers combine policosanol with other heart-healthy substances such as Coenzyme Q10 and antioxidants.

Do not take it if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. People who are allergic to bee stings or have food sensitivity to sugar cane might risk policosanol side effects.

Some people have reported the following policosanol side effects :

  • Weight loss
  • Polyuria (frequent or excessive urination)
  • Polyphagia (an excessive desire to eat)
  • Rashes
  • Migraines
  • Nervousness
  • Insomnia
  • Drowsiness and dizziness
  • Irritability
  • Upset stomach and other gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Nose and gum bleeding
